What the panel actually does
Your electrical panel takes the supply coming into the house and divides it across the circuits that feed your rooms, appliances and equipment. Each breaker is there to cut its circuit when the load goes beyond what the wiring is meant to carry.
Because it sits behind a door and rarely asks for attention, a panel is easy to forget until something downstream stops behaving. Most of what homeowners experience as an outlet problem or an appliance problem starts here.
Why panels get upgraded
Houses accumulate electrical load over time. Kitchens gain appliances, garages gain equipment, and heating and cooling systems get replaced with units that draw differently from the ones they succeeded. A panel specified for how a house was originally used will not always suit how it is used now.
An upgrade is about matching the panel to the current demand on it, and making sure the equipment protecting each circuit is in sound condition and safe to work on.
How we approach it
We start by looking at the panel itself and at what it is feeding: the condition of the equipment, how the circuits are distributed, and what the house is actually drawing. That assessment is what any recommendation should rest on, so we do it before discussing options.
If an upgrade is the right answer we will explain what it involves and put it in writing. If it is not, we will say so. Permitting and inspection, where the work calls for it, are handled as part of the job rather than left with you.
Signs worth having a panel looked at
None of these confirm a fault on their own, and none of them should be diagnosed from a list. They are the things that are worth a call rather than a wait.
- Breakers that trip repeatedly under everyday use
- A panel, breaker or outlet that feels warm to the touch
- Lights that dim noticeably when a large appliance starts
- Fuses rather than breakers, or a panel you cannot identify
- Visible corrosion, scorching or moisture in or around the panel
- A burning smell anywhere near the panel — in this case, stop and call
- No capacity left for a circuit you now need
- Work planned that will add significant load, such as a new HVAC system
Panel work is not a DIY job
A panel is live even when the main breaker is off, and the conductors entering it are not protected by anything inside the house. This is the part of a home's electrical system where a mistake has the least margin, which is why it is licensed work.
If you are unsure about something you have noticed, the safe order is to stop using the circuit involved and have it looked at rather than to open the panel.
What an assessment covers
We look at the condition of the panel and its breakers, how the circuits are laid out and labelled, the grounding and bonding arrangement, and whether what the house draws is consistent with what the panel was specified for.
You get a plain description of what we found and what, if anything, we would recommend doing about it. Any figures come after that assessment, based on your house, rather than from a list.
