Crawl Space Encapsulation in Birmingham, AL
Crawl space encapsulation and moisture control in Greater Birmingham: vapor barriers, sealing and dehumidifiers for damp crawl spaces.
What happens under the floor reaches the rooms above.
Birmingham summers are humid, and a vented crawl space draws that air in. Damp under the house can mean musty smells indoors, condensation on ducts and pipes, and wood that never fully dries.
Encapsulation closes the crawl space off from outside air: a sealed vapor barrier over the ground and walls, sealed vents and openings, and a dehumidifier where the space needs one.
Three parts of a dry crawl space.
Vapor barrier
A heavy liner over the ground and up the walls, sealed at the seams, so moisture from the soil stays below it.
Sealing
Vents and openings closed so humid outside air is no longer pulled under the house.
Dehumidification
Where the space needs it, a dehumidifier keeps the sealed crawl space dry through the summer.
Signs of a damp crawl space.
Any of these is worth an inspection:
- A musty smell in the house, worst in summer
- Standing water or wet soil under the house
- Condensation on ductwork or pipes below the floor
- Floors that feel soft or have started to sag
- Mold or mildew on joists or insulation
- High indoor humidity even with the AC running
Crawl space questions.
Is encapsulation the same as a vapor barrier?
A barrier on the ground is one part of it. Encapsulation also seals the walls, vents and openings so humid air stays out.
Will it help the air in the house?
Air from the crawl space rises into the living space, so a dry, sealed crawl space can mean fewer musty smells upstairs.
Do I need a dehumidifier?
Not every crawl space does. We check the moisture on the estimate visit and tell you.
